Hunting Spear

This is a hunting tool used for catching large animals such as wild boars by throwing it from a distance or thrusting it at close range. It consists of a metal blade driven into a wooden shaft. Spears are classified by blade shape into one-, two- and three-blade spears, and the shape and size of the blade may vary according to the intended prey. The handle is made of relatively light and solid lumbers such as those of ash trees or white oak, while one end of the blade is attached to a bamboo socket before being inserted into the handle. When hunting animals, chasers are mobilized to make noise in the valley where the quarry is hiding, while several spear holders wait at a designated spot where the animals are led to run toward, then use the spears to kill the target. At this point, the role of the first spear-thrower is important since if the attack misses a vital point, the prey may turn to attack the hunters.
