Marseilles, France

The Sarakatsani, a nomadic people of Greek origin, lived throughout the Balkan Peninsula, from Albania to Thrace, up until the early 20th century. Their economy and lifestyle were primarily founded on sheep and goat farming. Unlike seasonal migrations involving only adults, all the family members moved around with their herds, travelling with the essentials each family would need throughout the year.
This hut was created specially for the MuCEM by the Fraternity of Epirotes Sarakatsani. Inside, they have placed the everyday objects of the life of a family of shepherds: bed, clothing, hearth and cooking utensils, an icon to perform their devotions, and so on.
