The original horse is the ancestor of the modern horse. It lived in the Palaeogene Period (65-25 million years ago). The horse was the size of a fox and had more toes than the modern horse: four toes at the front and three with footpads at the back. This was to help them grip on the marshy forest ground. Their molars had ridges which cut the leaves they ate.
