The sculptural installation I see a mountain from my window, standing like an ancient sage begins from a material cultural history that presents questions of lineage, feminism, locatedness and time. Drawing on the rich symbolism of an heirloom of a Persian carpet that has been passed from mother to daughter for four generations in her family, Chopra has created an imaginary geometric topographic landscape. Central to her work is the history of lived spaces in Shimla and Lahore, crossing national boundaries and creating imagined communities through a family genealogy that sits at odds with rootless cosmopolitanism given its intimacy and warmth.
