An Illustration to Amarushataka – 100 lyrics of poet King Amaru of Kashmir who lived in 7th/8th century. The Amarushataka ranks as one of the finest lyrical poetries in the annals of Sanskrit literature, ranking with Kalidasa and Bhartṛhari's Sṛingarashataka. Its subject is mostly Sringara (erotic love, romantic love) including aspects such as love, passion, estrangement, longing, rapprochement, joy and sorrow. Here we see a ‘nayika’ with her confidante or ‘sakhi’. A peacock on top of the pavilion could symbolically indicate that they are discussing about her love interest.
