In the Draper'shop is a so called genre painting and is characterized as such by a narrative content of a typical moralizing meaning. In this case, an obvious analogy between the soft beautiful silk fabrics and the girl's smooth white skin, both the fabric and the girl are offered for sale to the wealthy middle-aged man. In the background an elderly woman is presented as a Procuress who also raises a warning finger. In her other hand there is a coin that alludes to the immorality of love bargain. The young girl's introspective passive attitude makes her a victim in an ongoing monetary transaction

- Artist info: The artist can probably be identified as Adriaen Bloem, also called Adriaen van Bloemen, court painter to Leopold I in Vienna, recorded in the service between 1668 and 1694. This is the only known painting by Adriaen Bloem, one of history´s almost forgotten artists. He lived in Vienna for almost thirty years and must have been more inspired by the Austrian manner of painting then by his fellow countrymen from Antwerp, judging from the Draper´s shop. There also exists a painting on the same subject in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna which once belonged to Leopold I, called A Gentlemen in the Draper´s shop, by Frans van Mieris, which points to the fact that Bloem most likely had seen the subject before.
