Until 1851, the island of Flores was part of the Portuguese empire and was sold to the Dutch by the governor of Timor without the consent of the Portuguese crown. The Portuguese heritage in that area is visible in the colonial style, but also the presence of Catholicism, with very intense manifestations of faith particularly in the celebrations of Holy Week. Larantuca is also known for the tradition, with more than two centuries, of praying the rosary in Portuguese, something that happens every Saturday at “Gereja Tuan Ma” or Chapel of Senhora Mãe.
