As a critical response to the current state of urban architectural theory in the 21st century, the idea of “the collective” unfolds as an interpretation of an amalgamate of layers that generate what we describe as the contemporary “city.” These layers imposed by the many actors that operate within different dimensions, be it political, social, economic, and technological, have evolved an urban theoretical dialogue from a new understanding of cities via the basis of data and infrastructure. Although the notion of Big Data and Smart Cities has been evolving as the next logical step in understanding the management and efficiencies of the contemporary city and its metabolism, there is still much to be explored as a link between smart infrastructure and the urban space that generates the collective commons. The tracking of flows in population displacement, transportation, amenities, and real estate prices, has made evident the need for architecture to engage the urban dialogue as data also manifests urban problems such as the paradoxical condition between shrinking cities and an expanding urbanity that produces urban voids, which is imminent in cities like Seoul.
