John the Baptist, the subject of the prayer on this page, appears in the middle of an initial D holding a scroll that declares Ego vox clamantis in deserto (I am a voice crying out in the desert). Saint Matthew's gospel described John as being the one who cries out in the desert, a figure mentioned in an Old Testament prophecy.
