Drawing by Butsujō Jisen.

Fenggan was the master of Shide and Hanshan, and this painting depicts the three of them as a Three materials in one set.

They are called “Tiantai Trio” because they lived in seclusion at Guoqing Temple on Mount Tiantai. The name “Shide” comes from the fact that the Zen master Fenggan picked him up. It is said that Fenggan rode a tiger when he went out, and this painting, in which the three are sleeping with the tiger, is called “Four Sleepers.”

The inscription is in five-character Quatrain.
