A tabletop object used to store writing utensils. In schools, these objects were used by schoolteachers and not students, who would usually have an inkwell for their ink and another hole for their quill in their school desks. Inkstands usually held various objects that would belong on an office desk or in a bureau (ink, writing pad, pounce pot, quill, blotting paper, etc.).
