The lack of landscape references on this badge gives this style the name Reform, a reference to the attempt of the Guangxu emperor (r. 1875 – 1908) to institute a number of reforms to the Qing dynasty government in 1898. This short-lived effort was curtailed by the emperor’s aunt, the Dowager Empress, who assumed control as regent.
