Virtually all the antique glass that has been found comes from excavations of settlements and burial grounds. The moisture and substances in the soil can act on glass and make it weather-stained. If this occurs, a thin, sometimes scaly layer forms on the surface, which may take on all the colours of the rainbow. This wonderful effect is called iridescence, after Iris, the Greek goddess of the rainbow.
