Phansi Museum

Phansi Museum
Berea, South Africa

A Zulu headrest made of sculptured wood. They tend to have a concave upper pillow platform, rising supportive columns and a base, commonly showing some uniformity of shape or decoration according to the region, tribe or sex. They were used to prevent dirt or insects from getting into the owner's hair whilst sleeping and also to preserve elaborate hairstyles and marriage hats
