Devrim Erbil was born in Uşak in 1937. He entered Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts in 1955, and graduated from the studio of Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu. In 1962 he was appointed as an assistant at the academy. He participated in the Young Artists biennales in Venice in 1962 and in Paris in 1963. Between 1978-82 Devrim Erbil was director of Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture, as well as continuing in his academic posts. He was awarded the Royal Court First Prize at the 5th Tehran Biennale in 1966, the Turkish Contemporary Painters Society Young Artist of the Year Award in 1968, second prize for painting at the Alexandria Biennale in 1972, and the Atatürk and Republic Prize in the Painting and Sculpture Competition commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Turkish Republic in 1973. In 1991 he was given the title of Turkish State Artist.
