When studies indicated that the Saturn I rockets were infeasible for a lunar mision, NASA decided to develop the massive three-stage Saturn V. As an intermediate measure the Saturn IB was developed, using the new S-IVB as the second stage powered by a single J2 engine.

The Saturn V however used a second stage (S-II) powered by five J2 engines, operating for six minutes, and an S-IVB as the third stage, which was fired twice during each mission and then sent into orbit around the Sun.
