The silk of this waist-length jacket was created using the ikat technique, which involves individual sections of the thread being dyed beforehand so that a regular pattern ensues when it is woven. Samarqand Bukhara in central Asia numbered amongst the centres for this technique in the 19th century.The knowledge about it therefore spread from Asia to Europe along the old routes of the Silk Road. The shape, cut and workmanship indicate Oriental influ- ences, in particular if one considers that what is Albania today was part of the Ottoman Empire for ca. 400 years.
