This jacket, made of fine shorn wool, is an example of masterful tailoring. It unites sensually feminine forms with a tailor’s technical accuracy. The oversized mutton sleeves emphasize the petite waist, underneath which arch the bell-shaped double coattails. In 1895, these tails, also called peplum tails, were very popular. The jacket is worn open and the straight fronts merge into rectangular lapels that are drawn over the shoulder and lie below the oversized fold-over collar. Collar and lapel are covered in rosewood coloured moiré and form an optical balance with the wide mutton sleeves. The jacket is fully lined with cinnamonbrown, silk taffeta.
