This monument was erected in 1892 by the Native Sons of the Golden West, commemorating the discovery of gold at Coloma. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, citizen groups such as the Native Sons of the Golden West, worried that California's historical sites were deteriorating, began to erect such historic landmarkers. Official landmark registration began in 1931, when the California State Legislature passed an act requiring the Department of Natural Resources to direct the program.
