James Smith & Sons specialises in umbrellas and walking sticks. They are still made in the shop basement. The firm was established in Foubert Street in 1830 and this branch opened in 1867. The shopfront, with its brazen display of signage, probably dates from around 1880 when the building, Hazelwood House, was remodelled following the creation of Shaftesbury Avenue. It is listed Grade II*.
