  • Title: Jar with abstract dragon design
  • Creator: Artist Unknown, Korea
  • Date Created: Korea, Joseon period (1392-1910)
  • Location: Korean Peninsula
  • Physical Dimensions: w33 x h31 x d33 mm (work (sight))
  • Label Copy: The creature wrapped around the body of this storage jar was rendered with such wild energy that its head, tail, and claws are barely recognizable; only the scales betray that it is indeed a dragon, a divine bringer of rain and benevolence. Such uninhibited painting and the red clay body suggest that this jar was made at a regional kiln in Jeolla-do rather than at the official Bunweon kilns in Gwangju, where the dragon jars would have most likely been painted by skilled court artists who followed a more restrained Chinese aesthetic. The jar was made in two sections, thrown separately and then joined together, which accounts for the irregular contour. The glaze over the coarse body is pitted but agrees with the energetic iron–brown design, making for a spirited vessel.
