The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (“the Joint”) maintained free loan societies in the Jewish communities of Poland. More than 175,000 Jews in Poland alone availed themselves of interest free loans. These Gemiloth Chessed kassas were put in place in order to give economic assistance to the poorest elements of the Jewish population in Poland.
