The first wave of jigsaw puzzle popularity for adults in the United States occurred in the very early 20th century. These well-crafted wooden puzzles were cut by hand, which made them expensive pastimes. They were only purchased by upper middle class, or wealthier citizens. A maker from Detroit created small puzzles in its "Amazeyu" line. These were less expensive than large examples, but still difficult enough to cut by hand.
