Very few American manufacturers produced jigsaw puzzles, or "dissected pictures" then, before the Civil War. One of the early makers was Mark Salom of Boston, who produced "Amusement for the Young" and "The Most Desireable Toy Ever Invented." Salom used popular prints of the day and made his puzzles of cardboard. His puzzle box cover contains more praise for the contents, similar to the lines above.
