The character Tarzan was created by author Edgar Rice Burroughs in 1912, appearing first in magazine installments and as a book in 1914. Film adventures, both serialized and featured, began soon afterwards. In 1933, during the American craze for jigsaw puzzles, Tarzan was a natural choice for a puzzle subject. Olympian swimmer Johnny Weissmuller then starred as Tarzan in the films. The jigsaw puzzle promotes, in print on the envelope in which it is housed, a ten-cent movie magazine as well.
