Jin-silk with Floral Medallions

China National Silk Museum

China National Silk Museum
Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China

This piece was made by sewing three patches together, the one lies in the center the largest with a width of about 47.5 cm. On a foundation with yellow as the key tone, highly-decorative floral medallions featuring large six-petal flowers accompanied by leaves and flower buds create a spectacular visual effect. Though only part of them remains, these large floral roundels, with a diameter of almost 38 cm, still show multiple complicated layers. Similar floral medallions had been seen on many fabric relics unearthed in Qinghai and Turpan. Two unrecognizable ink characters can be found on the unadorned patch in the rightmost.
This piece of weft-faced compound textile, woven with overt and hidden warp threads crossing weft yarns, every five warp as one cycle, used yellow weft threads to form the foundation and those wefts in brown, dark brown, ecru, light blue and dark blue to create the decorative pattern.
