Ren Yi, also known by his courtesy name Bonian, was born in Shanyin, Zhejiang province. Influenced by Chen Hongshou and Hua Yan, the painter excelled at flower-and-bird painting and focused on sketching. With a combination of outlining (goule), conglomeration of dots (diancu), and ink-splashing (pomo), his works feature fresh and bright colors as well as vivid and lively figures. Ren was also skilled at figure painting, especially portraits, where he was able to present a vivid facial expression of a character through a few brush strokes and light colours dyeing, and landscape painting, as a founder of the new Shanghai School of Painting.
