Yi Ik-tae (a.k.a. Yagye, 1633-1704) is a Jeju governor (moksa) served for two years from 1694 to 1696. Records say that he rebuilt many government office buildings of Jeju-mok including Gwandeokjeong Hall, Unjudang Hall, Uyeondang Hall and the Jeju's local public confucian school (hyanggyo), promoted learning, and compiled a chronicle of the province under the title Jiyeongnok (Understanding Jeju). The book contains details about how he was appointed to take the office of Jeju governor, his journey to the island, his duty and records of the history of Jeju including those of foreigners drifted ashore in the island in the period when Joseon was under the rule of King Sukjong.
