José María Fernández de Córdova y Rojas was a Spanish military officer and marine. He took part in the early stages of the Argentine War of Independence, where he was finally executed in 1810.
The portrait was created during his tenure at the Royal Company of Guardiamarinas. He is depicted wearing the official uniform with a hat, a navy blue jacket with gold and crismon trim, a crimson waistcoat and a white shirt with lace decoration on the chest and cuffs. He is wearing a typical eighteenth-century white wig. On the left, the inscription bears his name and the date he entered the Company.
