This map of the Korea's southern coasts was based on the surveys conducted by a british naval officer, Edward Belcher (1799-1877) on board H.M.S. Samarang from 1845 to 1884. It then continued to be updated until 1899 through the support from Japan. Belcher carried out precision surveys along the coastline of Jeju-do and calculated the height of Mt. Halla, concluding that it is 1,995 meters tall. The map also contains the marks for the depths of the most seas off the Korea's southern coasts. As for the map of Jeju, there is no significant difference between it and the today's Jeju maps. The heights of the island's major satellite cones are marked only by contour lines without numbers representing the heights above sea level.
