Jenő Rejtő, also known by the pseudonym of P. Howard, was one of the most widely read authors of the Hungarian literature, who was unrecognized by the official literary scene for decades. He wrote several successful crime novels, stories about the foreign legion and humorous fiction as well, but his best works were definitely the parodies of the easy-to-read genres. His works, characterized by absurd plot and inimitable linguistic humour, were perfect combinations of the well-known clichés of trash fiction and special kind of humour that was typical in Budapest in the 30s. Rejtő's self-published journal, the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard), is a real curio as it only had one issue in 1930. The cover, regarded as a symbol of the early Budapest lifestyle, was a collage about the spectacular buildings (theatres, clubs) of the Grand Boulevard of Budapest. The content of the journal could be regarded as a series of tabloid articles about fortune tellers, psychoanalysis, dressing room gossips, musclemen, bittersweet poems and of course the inevitable advertisements.

Rejtő Jenő P. Howard álnéven a magyar irodalom egyik legolvasottabb alkotója, akit évtizedekig nem ismert el a hivatalos irodalomtudomány. Nagysikerű krimik, légiós regények, humoros történetek szerzője. Legjobb műveiben e könnyed műfajok paródiáit írta meg. A ponyvairodalom jól ismert kliséit a pesti humorral elegyíti, alkotásait abszurd cselekményvezetés, utánozhatatlan nyelvi humor jellemzi. A Nagykörút c. folyóirat igazi kuriózum, egyetlen lapszáma jelent meg 1930-ban Rejtő saját szerkesztésében. Az avantgarde-dzsesszes címlap-kollázs a korabeli budapesti életérzés jelképének tekinthető, mely a nagykörút látványos épületeiből (színház, mulató) áll össze. A folyóirat bulvártémák seregszemléjének tekinthető tartalma: jósnők, pszichoanalízis, öltözői titkok, erőember, szomorkás versek és az elmaradhatatlan reklám.
