Rosel Epstein, her mother Frieda, and her brother Alfred moved to Mandatory Palestine before the war, after Rosel's father had died. Rosel and Frieda returned to Germany and Alfred (father of the man who submitted the photograph) moved to the United States. While there, he tried to obtain visas for his family. He was only able to obtain one, though, and chose to send it to his mother because he felt his sister's youth would provide her with a better chance of survival. Ellis Bleiman, a survivor in Haifa, testified that he had seen Rosel in Auschwitz.
