Karajá doll

Museu Nacional

Museu Nacional
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Ceramics and wax. Sculpture made according to the traditional patterns of making dolls of children. Collected by Willian Lipkind in 1939. During the management of Heloisa Alberto Torres an agreement was made between the University of Columbia, United States, and the National Museum to co-sponsor ethnological studies in Brazil. Several ethnologists, among them Lipkind, came to this agreement. None of these professionals spent much time in the Museum, but Heloisa tried to take advantage of her short stay to train young researchers and purchase collections for the Museum.
