Kartal, also called Chipalya or Khartal, is an ancient instrument which is a wooden clapper from Punjab. This is usually made of wood or metal, and has discs that clink when clapped together. A pair of wooden castanets with bells attached to them was the earliest form of Khartal. They are clapped together at high speeds to provide rhythmic support to bhajans, kirtans and folk music.
