Kimball African American World War Memorial

Aerial footage of the African American World War Memorial building in Kimball, McDowell County, West Virginia. Built in 1928 by returned black WWI veterans from the coalfields of southern W.Va. to house the segregated American Legion Post #36, named after Luther Patterson, a soldier killed in the war. The building was the center of community life, and included a library where students were tutored after school, a third floor auditorium for events and dances that featured major entertainers of the day, including Count Basie and Louis Jordan, among others.
