King David in a Landscape

Attributed to Michiel Gast

Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp

Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp

A circular painting that has been attributed to the landscape painter Michiel Gast on the analogy of The Travellers to Emmaus in Utrecht’s Centraal Museum. This last painting is monogrammed and dated MG 1577. Both works are highly comparable in style and are the only known works that can be attributed to this master. Because King David is painted in a landscape, not on oak, it is assumed that it dates from Gast’s time in Rome (1538–1556).
