In 1636 Athanasius Kircher published a Coptic grammar text "Prodromus coptus sive Aegyptiacus" (The Coptic, or Egyptian, Messenger). He the was the first to understand that hieroglyphs were an alphabetical system for writing which he tried to link to the Greek alphabet.
