In around 1820, the post office introduced course clocks (Kursuhren), which ensured punctuality, prevented the falsifying of the date, and were independent from the different time zones en route. The postilion’s course clock would be kept in a case like this. The leather-made piece is lockable, preventing unauthorized access and tampering. Its strap allows it to be hung over the shoulder.
