Kwoyo-muyombo (long-bearded) masks are associated with the Mukanda society and perform in honor of new members at the end of their initiation camp. They simultaneously embody ancestors and another kind of spirit mask called mbangu.
Mukanda society masks protect the initiation camp and take care of the young men during their apprenticeship in the forest by fetching food from the village for them.
