We do not know whether or not the people of the Old Stone Age considered those figurines as women, mothers, life-giving powers, or ancestresses. What is fascinating about the Venus statuettes is the hope that these unique prehistoric artefacts might reveal something about the way of thinking of Palaeolithic people. The predominance of female representations is often considered evidence for matriarchy in the Paleolithic Age. But as long as we do not understand the meaning of the figurines, the frequency of the representation does not reveal anything about the role of women. And we have to recognize that all we believe we know of Paleolithic thought is merely a projection of our own ideas.
