Nedim Günsür was born in Ayvalık in 1924. He attended secondary schools in Afyon and İzmir and in 1942 entered the Department of Painting at Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied under Bedri Rahmi Eyüboğlu. He graduated in 1948 and the same year won a scholarship from the French government to study in Paris, where he attended the studios of Lhote and Leger as an observer. He returned to Turkey in 1952 and in 1954 was appointed art teacher first in Zonguldak and then at Karadeniz Ereğlisi Junior School. In 1958 he resigned from his teaching post and returned to Istanbul. Nedim Günsür won first prize for his painting Gökyüzü-1961, which veered towards the fantastic, at the 24th State Exhibition of Painting and Sculpture in 1963. In 1972 he was selected as Painter of the Year by the art journal Milliyet Sanat Dergisi, and in 1973 he was awarded the Atatürk Prize at the Fiftieth Anniversary of the Turkish Republic Exhibition.
