Hekimi's work is characterised by dramatic titles and a rhythmic and decorative content influenced by Persian art. In a strange and contemporary twist, Marine Le Pen, Leader of France’s right-wing Front National used the words ‘grande peur’ in a speech before her election defeat in May 2017. The term also has roots in the French Revolution, referencing a general panic between July and August 1789.This dramatic Persian-inspired painting, translated as ‘The World’s Great Fear’, exhibits a childlike style, reinforcing an imaginary theme. However, the expression ‘grand peur’ originates from the French Revolution, referencing the panic in the summer of 1789.
The painting is largely occupied with numerous creatures randomly arranged throughout, conveying a sense of manic frenzy. The horse-like creature exhibits a menacing expression, revealing sharp teeth, indicating this animal is a source of the ‘great fear’. Camouflaged in the corner, the wolf appears alert for unsuspecting prey, waiting for an opportune moment to attack. The goat, however, looking up with a pleading expression, symbolises the inevitable sacrifices that will be made.
The subject in the centre is shrouded in a black robe, a sign of mourning, and appears worried with a far-away expression, while the other human figures exhibit a stone-faced seriousness. The diverse range of colours, whose margins often extend beyond the edges of the subjects, create a sense of feverish movement and hysteria. The dull shades generate a bleakness to the tense atmosphere.
Religious references are depicted, like the Jewish Star of David, and a white-robed angel flying overhead. These portrayals represent the desperation of the situation, and the subjects’ prayers for stability to be restored.
