The young kitchen maid

This painting, which at first seems dark, is in reality lit up by a fire to the left of the scene. The whole canvas is made of three distinct parts: an original pile of utensils and foodstuffs on the left, a shelf full of simple, solid objects above and finally the young girl, who seems distant by the zeal with which she polishes her pewter plate.
