Concert La Pasión según San Marcos by Osvaldo Golijov performed by Schola Cantorum de Venezuela at Holland Festival 2008.
A Latin American Passion by an Argentinean composer with Jewish roots. Osvaldo Golijov chose the Gospel of St. Mark, the shortest and probably the oldest of the Gospels. Golijov’s Jesus is dark of skin and is not only the Son of God but also a human being, with all the feelings of fear, insecurity and anger that are inherent in that state. Jesus’ words sound in Spanish and in a musical idiom that everyone understands: rapid rhythmical tunes that remind the listener of Latin American popular music. The musical setting consists mainly of singers and percussion, filled out with strings and brass. The role of Christ is given alternately to the chorus and the male and female soloists. In short: an unconventional swinging Passion as a conclusion to the Holland Festival, with a chorus of fifty-five from Caracas!
