The variety of subject matters the sculptor works with is broadening and sport would become a very interesting area of research. On the one hand the artist is a reflection of how sport is become increasingly present in society; in 1934, together with this work, he presented other sculptures such as Remador (Oarsman) and Esquiadora (Skier) at an exhibition at Galeries Laietanes in Barcelona. On the other, the artist does not leave behind his links with the ancient world, and these works remind us, albeit with an air of modernity, of the representations Greek art made of the world of sport. The search for movement became a constant in the sculptor’s work. Santiago Costa i Vaqué (Móra d’Ebre 1895-1984) A cousin of the sculptor Julio Antonio, he studied at the Llotja School of Barcelona and later worked for his cousin, from whom he received the classical influence and realist treatment, during his early period. Between 1919 and 1925 he produced a series of works in South America before returning to Madrid. His work is based on a block concept with significant integration within the cubic space. Its dominant characteristic is force and detained movement. He also produced paintings, with landscapes and popular scenes as themes.
