The Temptation of Saint Anthony

The Temptation of Saint Anthony is an allegory of the perdition which reigns over the earth, symbolised by those whose behaviour or social associations are reprehensible. Bosch strongly criticises behaviours which go against the code of good conduct. Hermits represented a positive example of the middle-class ideal: control over urges, rejection of the world's pleasures, hard work, restraint in the use of money and belongings, continuous circumspection and vigilance.
