Labor Day festivities traditionally marked the introduction of the eight hour working day- introduced gradually in South Australian work places as individual unions won their campaigns. The 48 hour working week was first introduced from 1873 in Adelaide and Port Adelaide. Labor Day celebrations included processions, floats, picnics, sport meetings and cultural events. In early celebrations, Port Adelaide unions joined the celebrations in Adelaide city. In 1900 the Port Adelaide Working Men’s Association decided to hold Labor Day celebrations in Port Adelaide and a strong tradition of activities, including sporting competitions at Alberton Oval, evolved.
