Lace cap

1590/1710

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

The headset, made of two parts of the same lace, of a Renaissance style, reflects the pattern books of the end of the sixteenth century and beginning of the seventeenth century. The voluminous effect of the embroidery within the rigorous geometric arrangement, follows the Spanish dressing customs of the early seventeenth century. The style and the small dimensions of the cap, characteristic of the Italian working class attire in various regions of Italy in the nineteenth century, suggest however that the cap's current assembly occurred at this later date.
