Lace collar

1640/1655

Palazzo Madama

Palazzo Madama
Torino, Italy

The Venetian flat stitch, of which this collar is a fine example, was one of the most sought-after, sophisticated and expensive types of lave around the mid-seventeenth century, before the taste of three-dimensional reliefs shifted the preference towards the Gros Point de Venise. Created on a symmetric arrangement, the design is reminiscent of the design patterns published around 1630-1640, in particular within Bartolomeo Danieli's 'Libro di disegni diversi' (Bologna, 1630) and his subsequent 'Vari Disegni di merletti' of 1639.
