Fashion trends put quality hand-made lace into and out of favour in the later 19th century. It became popular again in the later 1880s, and it experienced a boom in the 1890s and 1900s, peaking between 1895 and 1905. There was a noticeable move towards uniformity, however, and a lack of initiative in design, perhaps for reasons of security in a temperamental market. Lace of this period , like these flounces, can be difficult to date and to attribute to particular centres of production.
